Travel news: Snow closes Sierra passes

  • The first big snowstorm of the season recently hit California’s Sierra Nevada.  As a result, the seasonal east-west passes are closed by snow.  The National Park Services says it’s possible Tioga Pass (SR 120) could reopen, but I think it’s unlikely.  Other roads affected include Sonora Pass (SR 108), Ebbetts Pass (SR 4) and Monitor Pass (SR 89).  Carson Pass (SR 88) is open but with restrictions.  US 395 is open with no travel restrictions.  Check the Caltrans web site (www.dot.ca.govroadinfo) or call Yosemite National Park if you’re planning a trip.

It’s likely the closed passes won’t reopen until next May or June, depending on snow conditions.
