This year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally will be held August 3-9 in Sturgis, S.D. Locals are predicting that as many as one million motorcyclists will attend. Here’s what you need to know:
- Planning on attending? Most people I know who’ve been to the rally say they had a great time. But . . . if you don’t have accommodations locked up, you’d better move fast. Expect a shortage of rooms and sky-high rates. Ditto for campgrounds. I ran a spot check on Expedia today for rooms in Rapid City. Just about every lodging was full. One exception was the Ramada Inn, which is charging $700 per night.
- Want to visit the Black Hills? Not a good idea immediately before, during and after the rally. Motorcycle traffic will be heavy throughout the area. It will be congested and noisy. I suggest you plan your Black Hills trip at a different time.
